What's happening at Shane Lake?
The City of Prince George is developing a Fuel Management Prescription (FMP) for a section of Forest for the World Park near Shane Lake. This project is part of the City’s wildfire risk reduction strategy, originally identified in the 2018 Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and is now being planned for fuel treatment during winter 2025/26.
Why here?
This area was selected because it sits on City-owned land in a wildfire interface zone and plays a strategic role in wildfire defense. The treatment area borders UNBC lands (which are not included, as they fall outside the City’s jurisdiction) and is designed to:
- Create a defensible space around Shane Lake
- Improve access and maneuverability for wildfire suppression crews
- Reduce the risk of high-intensity crown fires
The network of existing trails and the natural break provided by Shane Lake make this an ideal location to enhance wildfire resilience within the park and adjacent neighbourhoods.
What to expect
- Planning and layout of the treatment area was completed in May–June 2025.
- A draft fuel management prescription is being finalized and will be submitted to the BC Wildfire Service by the end of August.
- Following their review, the prescription will be sent to the City of Prince George by mid-September.
- The City will coordinate fuel treatment operations, likely scheduled for late fall or winter, depending on site and weather conditions. You can expect trail and park area closures during the fuel treatment operation.
Only a portion of Forest for the World will be treated, and UNBC-owned lands are not part of this project at this time. Check out the Broddy Road Wildfire Mitigation video below to see the results of a similar initiative on city-owned land.
